It is possible to study in our great school on a limited budget and there are some clever ways to save your money.
|
- Take a part time job while you study or do exchange cleaning to save rent.
- Book in for 12 weeks part time and use the school facilities in the afternoon for self-study, homework and free activities.
- Study full time and then take two months off to go fruit picking.
- Book in for part time and use the self-study centre in the afternoon.
- Do your homework. It sounds simple, but students who do their homework learn much faster than students who do not. You can really take advantage of new information learned each day in class. It is guaranteed to help you improve your English at no cost.
- Go to every free activity to practise your English. Take opportunities offered by the school to meet local people (for example, salsa dancing).
- Get a job – for example in a restaurant in the evening.
- Move into a flat, as flatting is cheaper than homestay.
- Use a bicycle for transport or walk to save money.
- Take advantage of the free internet in the school.
- Instead of eating out in restaurants as many students do in the cities, cook up your own food more often.
- Join all free school activities and do all activities in town which are free. All these activities mean you can meet local people and practise your English without paying!
- Study for a slightly shorter time, for example ten weeks not twelve, and take advantage of all the special help in Nelson English Centre to make maximum progress with your English.
- After finishing study, you can continue to visit the school.
Temporary or part-time work is often available in Nelson, for example: restaurant work, fruit picking, fish factory, exchange cleaning in hostels. Nelson has the advantage of having only one English language school, which means there are not large numbers of young people who speak your language at work.
At Nelson English Centre it is possible to have a great school, friendly Nelson people who talk to you and some working opportunities as well. For strong students who like working outside there are always many job vacancies in fruit picking season.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Check that you have the correct visa to work in New Zealand as it is illegal to work on a tourist visa, but it is possible on a working holiday visa and sometimes on a student visa. NZ Immigration
Once in Nelson, jobs can be found on our school noticeboard, in the local newspapers, and through recommendations from friends.
