Staying in a family home lets you experience the New Zealand way of life. As the only private English school in Nelson we have a wide range of homes within walking and biking distance of the school. Nelson English Centre homestay families are warm-hearted, proud Nelson locals who enjoy welcoming visitors from other cultures.

Your Homestay Family

Our homestays are comfortable, with enough space, and a desk to study at in your bedroom. Three meals are provided at weekends, and breakfast and dinner Monday to Friday. You will improve your English because our families love talking and sharing their lifestyle with you. New Zealand is an outdoor-loving country and many families enjoy gardening, cycling, walking or boating.

Families Selected for You

For over twenty years we have worked to select and improve our range of families. Our experienced homestay coordinator has high expectations. Their benchmark is: 'If my children were overseas, would I like them to stay here?' Our homestay coordinator matches students with families that share their interests by communicating with students and agents at the point of booking. Our system therefore gives you the best possible homestay experience

Q. What accommodation options are available for students at Nelson English Centre?

A. Nelson English Centre offers carefully selected homestay families and independent accommodation choices. Many students choose homestay because it provides a safe, welcoming environment and daily opportunities to practise English outside the classroom.

Q. Why should I choose a homestay while studying English in New Zealand?

A homestay allows students to experience authentic New Zealand culture, improve their English through everyday conversations, and receive support from local hosts. Many students say living with a homestay family is one of the most rewarding parts of their study experience.

Q. Is homestay accommodation better than living in a student residence?

A. Many students find homestay accommodation particularly beneficial because it provides daily English practice, cultural immersion, and personal support. While independent accommodation offers more flexibility, homestay often helps students improve their English faster and gain a deeper understanding of New Zealand life.

Q. What is included in Nelson English Centre homestay accommodation?

A. Homestay students typically receive a private furnished bedroom, breakfast and dinner Monday to Friday and 3 meals on weekends, Wi-Fi access, and a supportive home environment. This allows students to focus on their studies while feeling comfortable and secure.

Q. How are homestay families selected by Nelson English Centre?

A. All homestay families are carefully screened and regularly monitored to ensure they provide a safe, friendly, and supportive environment. Nelson English Centre works closely with hosts to help students have a positive and successful experience in New Zealand.

Q. Can I practise English outside the classroom through my accommodation?

A. Yes. Living with a homestay family is one of the best ways to improve English quickly. Students can practise speaking, listening, and everyday communication skills during meals, family activities, and daily life, helping build confidence and fluency.

Q. How can I find shared accommodation in Nelson?

We have a notice board at school where members of the community come and put rooms or houses available to rent.
