High School Preparation
Students will study full-time IELTS or General English, GE, (23 hours per week) dependent upon their starting English level. Two tutoring hours per week focused on High school preparation. These targeted specialised intensive add-on sessions help students master technical vocabulary, exam strategies, and high school communication standards.
For students wanting to enter high school or during school holidays. For students aged 14 years and over.
NCEA Literacy Standards
Reading Classes Will Include:
Exercises to build reading fluency across a variety of text types, including factual, narrative, persuasive, and instructional texts.
A focus on extending vocabulary, with particular attention to:
Academic collocations
Phrasal verbs
Idiomatic expressions
Strategies to identify and understand:
Inference
Author attitude and tone
Speculation and implied meaning
Activities to develop understanding of text structure and grammatical features, including:
Pronoun referencing
Cohesive devices (e.g. conjunctions, transitions)
Substitution and ellipsis
Modal verbs and their impact on meaning
Writing Classes Will Include:
Exercises to build writing fluency in different text types, including recounts, arguments, explanations, and descriptive writing.
Practice in producing accurate and competent written texts with:
Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling
Awareness of audience and purpose
Support in improving structure and organisation, including:
Developing cohesive and coherent paragraphs
Using effective introductions and conclusions
Encouragement to expand language choices, with attention to:
Using the correct register and tone
Selecting topic-appropriate vocabulary
