Frequently asked questions about English + MTB Coaching Holiday
Q. What is the English + Mountain Biking Programme?
A. The English + Mountain Biking Programme combines morning English lessons with afternoon mountain biking in the Nelson Tasman region, one of New Zealand's premier riding destinations. Instead of spending your entire day in a classroom, you'll improve your English through interactive lessons and then put your communication skills into practice while exploring scenic trails, riding with other international students and meeting local riders.
The programme is suitable for beginners through to advanced riders. Depending on your experience, you may enjoy skills coaching, guided trail rides or independent riding on Nelson's extensive network of world-class trails. It's an exciting way to build confidence in English while enjoying an active outdoor lifestyle.
Q. Who is this programme designed for?
A. This programme is designed for adults who enjoy the outdoors and want to combine learning English with mountain biking. It is popular with gap-year travellers, university students, working professionals, adventure seekers and mature learners looking for an active study holiday.
You don't need to be an expert rider. Whether you've never ridden a mountain bike before or regularly tackle technical trails at home, the programme can be tailored to your experience and fitness level.
Q. Do I need mountain biking experience?
A. No. Beginners are welcome.
If you're new to mountain biking, experienced local coaches can introduce you to bike handling, braking, cornering, climbing and descending in a safe and supportive environment. As your confidence grows, you'll progress to more challenging trails.
Experienced riders can focus on technical skills, flow trails, jumps, enduro riding or longer cross-country adventures depending on their interests.
Q. Why choose Nelson for mountain biking?
A. Nelson is recognised as one of New Zealand's top mountain biking destinations. The region offers hundreds of kilometres of trails, excellent weather, beautiful scenery and riding opportunities throughout much of the year.
Within a short drive of the school you'll find purpose-built trail centres, native forest singletrack, downhill runs, family-friendly green trails and challenging black-grade technical trails. The combination of riding, sunshine and a relaxed lifestyle makes Nelson one of the best places in the southern hemisphere to enjoy mountain biking.
Q. Which trails will I ride?
Depending on your ability and the programme schedule, you may ride a variety of trails including Codgers Mountain Bike Park, Silvan Forest, Coppermine Trail, Cable Bay Adventure Park, Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park and, where appropriate, Wairoa Gorge.
Each location offers something different, from gentle beginner trails and flowing forest rides to technical descents, rocky terrain and spectacular views over Tasman Bay. This variety keeps every riding day fresh and exciting.
Our standard two week programme will focus on coaching in the Codgers Mountain Bike Park as it is 5 minutes drive from Nelson English Centre
Q. Is coaching included?
A. Yes. Coaching is included as part of the programme. Qualified local instructors from Gravity can help you develop better balance, cornering, braking, climbing techniques, descending confidence and trail awareness.
Many students discover that even a single coaching session makes their riding smoother, safer and more enjoyable. More experienced riders can also benefit from advanced coaching focused on technical features, line choice and efficient riding techniques.
Q. Will I improve my English while riding?
A. Yes. Mountain biking creates natural opportunities to speak English outside the classroom. You'll communicate with instructors, fellow riders, local cyclists and other international students throughout the day in English.
Many students find that learning vocabulary in real situations helps them remember new words more easily. You'll use English to ask questions, discuss trail conditions, share experiences, order food after rides and make new friends from around the world.
Q. Can beginners and advanced riders join together?
A. Yes. Riders are grouped according to their ability whenever possible. Beginners focus on developing confidence and basic skills, while more experienced riders can explore longer and more technical trails.
This flexible approach means everyone enjoys riding at an appropriate level without feeling pressured or held back by others.
Q. What equipment do I need?
A. If you already own a mountain bike and riding gear, you're welcome to bring them. If you're travelling internationally, high-quality bike hire is available locally, including full-suspension and hardtail mountain bikes. Gravity will supply a high quality mountain bike and helmet for the coaching.
Helmets are essential, and protective equipment such as gloves and knee pads is recommended for many trails. We'll help you organise everything you need before your first ride so you can simply enjoy the experience. Everything can be hired here:

Q. Why choose Nelson English Centre instead of another English school?
A. Very few English language schools in the world offer a dedicated English and Mountain Biking programme. Nelson English Centre combines professional English teaching with access to one of New Zealand's most respected mountain biking regions.
Students benefit from small English classes, friendly teachers, experienced local riding partners and an outstanding variety of trails within easy reach of the school. Instead of simply adding an occasional bike ride to your holiday, you'll enjoy a programme built around learning, adventure and the unique outdoor lifestyle that makes Nelson so special.
